ABOUT VEGAN DIETS FOR CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS...
Vegan diets include only foods of plant origin. Strict vegans eat only grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, and vegetable fats. Many families, however, practice variations on veganism and vegetarianism, and each child or adolescent’s specific diet history and restrictions are carefully obtained by our Pedi-RD. Special attention is given to dietary practices that enhance absorption of zinc and iron from plant foods as well as including, good sources of plant proteins, complex carbohydrates, omega-3 fatty acids, linolenic acids, vitamin B-12, riboflavin, zinc, calcium and, if sun exposure is not adequate, vitamin D. Although, there have been case reports of children failing to thrive or developing cobalamin deficiency on vegan diets, these are rare exceptions. According to The American Dietetic Association and The American Academy of Pediatrics, appropriately planned vegan diets can be followed safely by infants, children and adolescents without compromise of nutrition or growth and with some notable health benefits. With a willing palate and the growing number and availability of fortified vegan foods our Pedi-RD can help children and adolescents meet all nutrient needs. Efforts to further prevent any macro or micro nutrient deficiencies are also considered.
